Mayor Knight approves lowered occupational license tax at city council meeting

Hopkinsville City Council Members had a tied vote again concerning an ordinance lowering the occupational license tax rate, and again the mayor broke that tie at Tuesday’s meeting.

Council members were split concerning an ordinance to lower the occupational license tax rate from 1.5% to 1.3% of a business’s net profits. At the November 4 meeting, some council members shared that the city currently has a lot of expenses on its plate and is not in a position for a tax decrease.

At that meeting, Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight broke the tie and approved lowering the rate, and he did the same at Tuesday’s meeting. The vote was 5-to-5, and Ward 10 Council Member Mike Velez was the final vote, but he decided to abstain, leaving the choice in Knight’s hands again.

The lowered rate will come into effect in July 2026.

Council members also voted to repeal ordinances concerning the Hopkinsville Cable Television Oversight Authority after it was dissolved in October.
