If you happen to pick up the latest edition of the Golf Digest Magazine, you will find a familiar name listed among the top golf coaches in Kentucky.
Mitchell Moore, who operates the Mitchell Moore Golf Academy at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club, has been drawing attention for his teaching skills for the last few years.
Moore said to be included in the list is truly an honor.
Moore is a household name to golf in Western Kentucky. He played high school golf at Christian County High School and earned a four-year scholarship to play at Murray State University.
Following a successful college career, Moore played professionally on a tour in South Carolina for several years before coming back to Hopkinsville to work and teach at The Links at Novadell.
After Novadell closed several years ago, he began his academy at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club. It didn’t take long for people to find out that Moore could significantly help their game.
He said in addition to local players, he has players from several states that come for instruction.
Among Moore’s top players are KHSAA state champion Landon Hunt as well as Parker Elkins, who won the Tennessee high school state championship two years ago.
Moore said that’s one of the best parts of coaching.
Moore began playing on junior tours as a youngster. He holds the record for most wins in the Hopkinsville City Amateur and also won the prestigious Commanding General’s Tournament at Fort Campbell twice.
He admits there weren’t as many opportunities to get instruction when he was younger. All that has changed.
Moore is quick to point to the HGCC junior program and others in Hopkinsville who are helping grow the game locally. But he admits seeing his name along with some of the top coaches in the country is “pretty cool.”
