Veterans honored, celebrated with Todd Co. Central ceremony

While Veterans Day itself isn’t until November 11, the students and staff at Todd County Central High School invited the community to come honor and celebrate their local veterans in their annual Veterans Day ceremony Friday morning.

It was a full house in the gymnasium of the high school, filled with veterans and their families, as students performed musically, read words of heartfelt gratitude, and taught the crowd about the traditional folding of the flag, as each fold holds its own meaning. To get things started, Principal Lee Quarles welcomed their esteemed guests, saying that Veterans Day is the public’s chance to thank all those who have served for their dedication and sacrifice.

The keynote speaker was Colonel Eddie Simpson with the Kentucky National Guard, and he says Veterans Day is more than just a day on a calendar—it’s a time to reflect, and honor, those who have stepped up to defend this nation and its freedoms.

He says those brave men and women make sacrifices of all kinds, from leaving home for long stretches of time, missing birthdays and holidays, to risking their lives on the battlefield.

The veterans in attendance were led to their seats before the ceremony to the sound of drums, as the crowd cheered and waved flags. And before that, they got a chance to have a breakfast provide by the school, all in the name of honoring their dedication and loyalty they and their families have shown to their fellow man.
