A $1.5 billion uranium enrichment facility is coming to Paducah, and on Tuesday Governor Andy Beshear joined General Matter to break ground on the new project.
General Matter is an American fuel production company with the mission of expanding nuclear energy, and the company signed a lease with the U.S. Department of Energy for the former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.
The facility is set to have 140 jobs and will focus on developing uranium enrichment technology to support nuclear energy production. General Matter CEO Scott Nolan says they are proud to reactivate the historic Paducah power site and look forward to further investing in America’s nuclear infrastructure.
Beshear says General Matter has made one of the largest economic investments ever for Western Kentucky and it reflects Kentucky’s leadership in nuclear energy. General matter’s facility will be operational by 2030.
