Pearl Cohn captures Best of the West passing tournament title

Pearl Cohn earned the championship in the Best of the West 7 on 7 Passing Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Stadium of Champions.

The Firebirds, from Nashville, Tenn., defeated Paducah Tilghman in the championship game.

Tournament host, Hopkinsville, went 2-2 on the day.

The Tigers, who are preparing for their final season as a school, defeated Warren Central 24-14 and then advanced into the winner’s bracket quarterfinals.

However, Paducah sent the Tigers to the consolation bracket with a 54-9 victory and Hoptown was eliminated in the next game 44-21 by Macon County.

Christian County’s day was much shorter as the Colonels, who are also preparing for their final season, started the morning out with a 24-11 loss to Fort Campbell.

In the consolation bracket, the Colonels and Kenwood were tied 29-29 but the Knights picked off a pass and scored a late touchdown to win 39-29. There was some confusion about the time when the Knights scored, but officials advanced Kenwood to the next round.

Hopkinsville opens the regular season on Aug. 23 against Stratford, Tenn., at the Stadium of Champions.

Christian County’s regular season begins Aug. 24 at home against Clarksville Northeast.
