Clarksville City officials broke ground on a pedestrian bridge project that will cross the Red River and connect the Clarksville Greenway Trail System on Tuesday.
The pedestrian bridge will connect the Red River East and Austin Peay State University trails to the Pollard Road Trail to create a continuous route that will be around 11 miles long. The bridge’s construction costs $5.8 million and is partially funded by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts called the groundbreaking an exciting landmark moment and says the bridge project is a creative way to connect distinct areas of the city. Clarksville Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Letourneau says once the bridge is complete, people will be able to travel from Downtown Clarksville to Tiny Town Road without getting into vehicle traffic.
To prepare for construction, the north side of the trail will be closed from the water treatment plant to trail’s end at the river, and the south side of the trail will be closed from the lift station to the Kraft Street Bridge. The bridge is set to be completed in March 2026.
