The shape of downtown Hopkinsville is looking different these days, as the Phoenix Building comes down and developments start to move into the area.
City Council recently approved incentives for Phoenix Properties of Western Kentucky, LLC—not related to the Phoenix Building—as they look to move a healthcare development into the Forbes building on South Virginia Street. Mayor J.R. Knight says they’re excited to have this coming downtown for citizens, and it will likely create around 50 new jobs in that area.
Repair efforts also continue on buildings that were damaged in storms earlier this year.
Some of that will rise from the ashes of the historic Phoenix Building, which was demolished earlier this week, with clean-up efforts still underway. Mayor Knight says some of the bricks will be salvaged, to then be used in repairing other historic buildings, including the iconic Clock Tower.Â
There’s no plan yet as to what might take shape where the Phoenix Building once stood, but the mayor is hopeful that whatever it is, he hopes its something that will help revitalize and incentivize downtown.
