Local man charged with attempted murder of a police officer following traffic stop

A Hopkinsville man is facing an attempted murder charge following a struggle with a Hopkinsville Police Department officer.

According to a news release from HPD, an officer conducted a traffic stop Wednesday on 43-year-old Carlo Jones of Hopkinsville, who had allegedly passed a vehicle on the right-side shoulder on Old Clarksville Pike near Fort Campbell Boulevard.  When the officer made contact with Jones, he allegedly became argumentative and stated he did not need to provide his driver’s license.

When the officer moved to detain Jones, Jones allegedly pushed the officer back and then ran towards him and grabbed him, sending them both over the guardrail and down an embankment.

That’s when Jones allegedly got on top of the officer and started strangling him to the point the officer almost lost consciousness.

Jones was ultimately taken into custody and charged with first-degree attempted murder of a police officer, resisting arrest, menacing and improper passing.
