As winter slowly melts away, Jeffers Bend Environmental Center is preparing to host community events and at Thursday’s Hopkinsville Kiwanis Club meeting Charles Turner highlighted what they have planned.
Turner is a member of the Jeffers Bend Steering Committee and shared that the environmental center’s seasonal activities kick off on May 24 with Take Kids Fishing Day. The first fishing day was hosted in 1999 and had around 200 attendees, now up to 1,000 folks come out to do some fishing.
Turner says the day will also include water activities for children.
Then Benefit for the Bend will take over the Christian County Extension Office on June 21 and is the environmental center’s largest fundraiser. Funds from the event will ensure that the environmental center can remain well-maintained and continue to host events. Turner says their fundraising goal is $30,000.
The Hummingbird Festival returns on August 23 and instead of being hosted in the evening, the festival will be hosted in the morning when it’s cooler. Turner says switching to the morning will create better conditions for hummingbird banding.
Naturefest is one of the environmental center’s biggest events and returns on September 20. Turner says they typically have around 40 nature-related activities available for attendees to enjoy.
Turning toward the holidays, a bit of Halloween spirit will be in the air at Torchlight Tales on October 18. Attendees can wear their Halloween costumes and listen to local historians tell the eerie story of the Bell Witch.
To conclude the year, families are invited to come to Christmas at the Bend on December 6 for photos with Santa, making cards for senior citizens and much more. For more information, and to stay up-to-date on events happening at Jeffers Bend Environmental Center, visit jeffersbend.org.
