The man charged in the 2023 murder of Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Caleb Conley will spend the rest of his life in prison, following a guilty plea to 14 different charges.
According to a news release from Attorney General Russell Coleman, 47-year-old Steven Sheangshang pleaded guilty to 14 felony charges Wednesday afternoon in both Scott and Fayette counties, including murder of a police officer, robbery, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and first-degree wanton endangerment, along with felony assault and burglary charges.
Sheangshang was then sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 70 years, to run concurrently.
Deputy Conley was 35-years-old at the time of his death—he was shot and killed by Sheangshang during a traffic stop on I-75 in Georgetown in May of 2023. Deputy Conley had served with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department for four years, having spent eight years serving in the U.S. Army. He leaves behind two children, his wife Rachel and his parents.
Deputy Conley conducted a stop on a vehicle Sheangshang was driving in Scott County which was connected to outstanding felony warrants. As Deputy Conley approached the rear bumper of the vehicle, Sheangshang rolled down his window shot and killed him, all in less than 10 seconds. He then fled the scene, forcefully broke into the home of Gary and Rebecca McQuain, held the couple at gunpoint and stole their vehicle. Later that same day, he shot and seriously wounded a Fayette County man and stole his vehicle before being apprehended by law enforcement.
