Warren Central overwhelms Christian County

The Christian County Colonels’ basketball schedule has been brutal to this point. Tuesday night saw the Colonels play arguably their best opponent of the season.

Warren Central used a stifling defense and the long-range shot to crush the Colonels 70-30 in a boys’ high school basketball game in Bowling Green.

The Dragons (16-2), who are No. 14 in the RPI, used an 8-0 run to end the first quarter and take a 13-5 lead. But defense was the name of the game for Central in the second quarter, as the Colonels managed only two points in the first 4:36 and those were an accidental tip-in by the Dragons for the Colonels.

Warren Central led 25-9 at halftime and the second half belonged to the Dragons’ Robert “Amp” McAfee, who hit four of his six 3-pointers in the final two periods on the way to a 24-point night.

Jarek Kirk, a 6-foot-6 center, was a force inside, blocking several shots and altering many others. He also added 13 points.

The Dragons led 47-19 after three quarters and continued to pour it on Christian County in the fourth quarter outscoring the Colonels 23-11 in the final frame.

Kam Williams led Christian County with six points.

The Colonels played without leading rebounder and second-leading scorer Rahsean Stevenson, who missed the game due to a concussion. Junior guard Darren Bigbee also missed the game for Christian County.

Christian County slipped to 5-17 on the season and returns to action Friday night against University Heights Academy at Lyle Dunbar Gym. A win will give the Colonels the top seed in next month’s District 8 tournament. However, a UHA victory, would force a three-way tie in the standings and the seeding would be decided by RPI. Hopkinsville currently has the highest RPI among teams in District 8.

Friday’s game begins at 6 p.m. with the F&M Bank Pregame Show set for 5:45 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm.
