DEbony Anderson’s putback basket at the buzzer lifted the Christian County Lady Colonels to a 41-40 girls’ high school basketball victory over host Bowling Green Tuesday night.
Anderson rebounded her own miss and was able to muscle the shot up past two defenders and the ball fell through the net as the buzzer sounded. Christian County improved to 4-3 on the season with the win.
The Lady Colonels jumped out to a 9-0 lead and 23-15 at halftime. However, the Lady Purples (3-3), who are coached by former Todd County Central star and coach Calvin Head, went on a 14-4 run to start the third quarter and grabbed a 29-27 advantage.
Bowling Green led 33-29 after three quarters as Katy Smiley, the daughter of former Todd County Central boys’ basketball coach and Christian County assistant coach Steve Smiley, scored six points in the quarter.
The two teams exchanged leads several times in the fourth quarter and the Lady Purples took a 40-39 lead and had a chance to put the game away, but missed four straight free throws in the final minute.
Zara Hall’s misses gave the Lady Colonels the ball for their final possession. They missed three shots before Anderson was able to put in the game-winner.
Christian County battled foul trouble much of the second half as starters Daniya Bradley and Lazarie Daniel both fouled out. Daniel was out most of the game due to foul issues.
