Hopkinsville Police arrested 37-year-old James Johnson of Hopkinsville late Wednesday night after he reportedly rammed into a police cruiser and fled from law enforcement.
According to a report from police, an officer observed Johnson driving a car with an obscured back license plate. The officer proceeded to conduct a traffic stop, and the pair pulled into a Dollar General parking lot on Lafayette Road.
As the officer exited their vehicle, Johnson reportedly put his car in reverse hitting the patrol vehicle before fleeing. During the pursuit, Johnson turned onto Stone Valley Drive and reportedly ignored three stop signs before pulling into a driveway.
Johnson then attempted to flee on foot into a residence but was apprehended. He was allegedly resistant and threw multiple bags containing cocaine as officers detained him.
While searching Johnson’s car, officers reportedly found an open container of alcohol and discovered that his temporary license plate tag was expired and partially forged. Johnson’s license was also reportedly suspended out of Tennessee and did not have valid vehicle insurance.
Officers then administered a DUI test on Johnson and during the test he reportedly threatened the responding officers.
Johnson is charged with first-and-second-degree fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first-degree wanton endangerment, tampering physical evidence, leaving the scene of an accident, first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree terroristic threatening, disregarding a stop sign and many other traffic related offenses.
