Judge-Executive talks FEMA assistance, infrastructure

Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam spoke with WHOP News recently, and he discussed infrastructure, transportation and FEMA assistance.

Earlier this week, Judge Gilliam attended a ribbon cutting for new barracks for soldiers on Fort Campbell, which means he got to visit with and speak with federal delegates who were also present about what needs the county is facing and how they could help.  One of those was the matter of Interstate 24 from the Tennessee state line, which he says is in dire need of widening.

With the very steep cost that project will likely bring, Gilliam says the time to start the ball rolling on it is now. On the subject of roads, he says the County Road Department is in the process of getting about 12 miles of roads repaved.

Judge Gilliam reminded residents who were impacted by the May severe storms that FEMA is still in town and still accepting assistance grants for any damage that was sustained. He urged folks to go ahead and fill out an application, even if they think they may not get awarded anything, because they could be surprised.

He says most local farmers have already handled any loss of crops they experienced, but county government is still waiting to hear from the United States Department of Agriculture about possible federal assistance.

Judge Gilliam says crews continue debris clean up efforts across the county from those storms.

Citizens may have noticed some renovations happening at the new Christian County Judge-Executive’s Office—which was once the Christian County Sheriff’s Office—as they work to address water issues at the front of the building.
